Building a Custom Tool Storage Wall in Your Garage or Barn

10/16/2026

Howdy, handy friends! The Answer Man here. If finding a roll of painter’s tape or a 1/2-inch socket in your shop feels like an archaeological dig, you aren’t alone. Between summer farm projects, lawn care, and gear maintenance, workshop benches tend to turn into dumping grounds for tools, cords, and hardware.

A custom tool storage wall is one of the best weekend upgrades you can make to a barn, garage, or shop. Get your gear off the bench and onto the wall, and you’ll free up floor space, keep dust and moisture off your power tools, and be able to spot every tool you own at a glance.

Here’s how to build a solid, customizable tool wall using gear and supplies from C&C Farm and Home.

Step 1: Pick your storage system

Different tools need different kinds of support, and plenty of shops end up using a mix.

If you’re hanging heavy power tools, chainsaws, or bulky hardware, build your backer board out of 3/4-inch interior plywood. It’s rock solid, and you can screw hooks, French cleats, or custom brackets into it anywhere you like. For hand tools, wrenches, tape measures, and hammers, heavy-duty pegboard does the job well; go with metal or heavy plastic over traditional hardboard, since it holds up better under shop conditions. And if your tool collection keeps growing, a slatwall system lets you slide hooks, bins, and baskets around as your setup changes.

Step 2: Mount furring strips and find your studs

Never mount a storage wall flat against drywall or barn siding. Pegboard hooks need clearance behind the board to latch on, and heavy plywood needs to anchor into your wall framing, not just the surface.

Start with a stud finder and mark your studs, usually 16 inches on center. Then screw 1×3 furring strips horizontally across the studs, using heavy-duty timber screws from our fasteners aisle. Fasten your plywood or pegboard panels to those furring strips, which leaves a 3/4-inch air gap behind the panels for your hooks and mounts to grab onto.

Answer Man Tip: Trace your tools. Once your hammers, saws, and drills are hanging where you want them, grab a permanent marker and trace their outlines on the board. At the end of the workday, you’ll know at a glance if something didn’t make it back.

Step 3: Add hooks, brackets, and bins

Now comes the fun part: organizing. Swing by our tool accessories and housewares departments to grab the right hanging gear.

Heavy-duty double hooks hold cordless drills, circular saws, and impact wrenches securely by the handle. Magnetic tool bars mount right to your plywood backer and keep screwdrivers, pliers, and drill bits within reach. And small parts bins or baskets are worth hanging up too, so screws, nails, wire nuts, and tape rolls stop piling up on flat surfaces.
